Mary & Marshall

Mary and Marshall grew up in Syracuse, NY.  Their den is wallpapered with pictures of the kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids.  There was chicken in the oven  and a baby deer resting in the shade when their grandson, Josh, brought me over to meet them.  Charlie the cat was roaming throughout the interview, asking for attention, and managed to cause a loud clang in an attempt for attention.  

Marshall's father and mother met in Wichita, Kansas.  His father was a professional boxer.  He was the main sparring partner for the heavyweight champion of the time, Joe Lewis, a.k.a. "The Brown Bomber".   

Mary's parents were a biracial couple living in a white neighborhood in Syracuse.  Their father made sure they toed the line.  Chores were used as lessons on life.
